Random Post #14What I got behind the meaning of "The DUFF" Kody Keplinger

Hey Everyone!

So I have something to share with you.  As some of you may know I am a huge fan of Kody Keplinger's The DUFF.  And I know that I have been posting quite a bit about both the movie and book lately, but I am just so excited!! I am seriously very passionate behind the message of this book!

But for some reason some people aren't seeing it for what it actually means!  Okay, so maybe I can see where some people are getting their misconstrued messages.  For instance, for those of you who don't know, "DUFF" stands for "Designated, Ugly, Fat, Friend", and if you've seen the trailer for the movie... here it is if you haven't....

then you obviously know that the main character, who is called "The DUFF" in movie, Bianca, played by Mae Whitman is 100% neither Fat OR Ugly! In fact, she is absolutely gorgeous!!

But anyway, that is not at all what the message of this book/movie is!!!!!!!

It is NOT saying that Mae's character, Bianca, is ACTUALLY physically fat or ugly, it's all about one thing...fitting into high school!!

I've shared it a few times, but once again I will let you know that high school wasn't the best time in my life.  I was bullied, I had crappy friends, and I constantly felt like an outsider in the different friends groups I had.

And it wasn't until 2010, when I first read The DUFF by Kody Keplinger that I actually finally realized how I felt and how to describe it!

Everyone has felt like the "DUFF" at one point or another in their life.  They may not have been able to put a name to it, but none the less, they have felt like the outcast.  The person that didn't quite fit in to their group of friends.

THAT is the message of this book and movie!

Not for others to start calling each other names, but for individuals to realize that they weren't the only one who felt like that.  Finally a way to feel like you can relate to someone...in fact everyone!

You may be asking why am I writing this post?

Well the answer is that the other day I had a Facebook friend share the trailer and tag it "This is Fucking Insulting".  Along with the video a bunch of her friends commented saying "No, no this is wrong. Abort the planet", and "How were they allowed to make this shit".

Well let me tell you how people are "allowed to make this shit"!  To send a message to our pretty (excuse my french) FUCKED up teenagers now a days!

Our world is a cruel place! I went through it myself, and I'm witnessing it going on in our school system today!  People call each other names!  I heard an eleven year old girl tell another eleven year old girl (who is supposedly her best friend) that she doesn't care if she dies or not, because no one will "give a shit"!  Can you believe that?!

"DUFF" is not supposed to start becoming a terrible name to call each other!  It's supposed to send the message that YOU ARE NOT ALONE!  You may feel like the outsider, but most likely the rest of your friends have felt the exact same way at one point or another.

Know you are not alone!

So there is my rant for the day! Happy Friday the 13th!  Today would be my grandmother's 79th birthday, and as she always said, "Friday the 13th, is my luckiest number!" :)

Hope everyone has a great Valentines Day!

  1. Thanks for this! I showed someone the cover of The DUFF when I was re-reading it a few weeks ago and I think she was kind of sad by it ... but that's not why it's called that, as you've shown here.

    1. Thanks Liz! As you know I get pretty darn possessive of my favorite books so I just felt this message had to be put out there before the movie hits theaters next Friday.
