The DUFF by Kody Keplinger (ReRead/Re-Reviewing) :)

Hey Everyone!!

So this marks the last day of #ReadTheDUFF Read-a-long!

I am currently in Florida, enjoying a much needed vacation with my amazing boyfriend at Walt Disney World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but I still wanted to share with you guys once again, a book that is very special and close to my heart!

So this is the first time I've ever done this, but for the first time ever I, The Romance Bookie, will be RE-Reviewing a book!!!  Wow, I can't believe I'm doing this!

But when you feel so passionate about a story, and it's been years and years since you've reviewed it, why not?!

Anyway, I reviewed Kody Keplinger's debut novel, The DUFF back in 2011 (HERE is that review), shortly after it first was released, and it was one of my very very first reviews! No joke!

One of the reasons, why I'm Re-Reviewing The DUFF, is because back in 2011, The DUFF did not get a proper review on it's own.  It was put together with a bunch of other books, because during that week I went through this obsessive reading binge where I read like SEVEN books in SEVEN days! I know crazy right?

Anyway, finally for the first time ever, I'm going to give The DUFF it's very own review.  Something it deserved to get a long time ago...

So here goes...

From Goodreads:

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.
Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

My Thoughts:

So like I said back in 2011, and what I thought to myself as I reread it again in 2011 and then AGAIN in 2012, and possibly 2013, is that I LOVE this book!  It is seriously on my life of all-time favorite books ever!!

But now, that I have read in 2015 again, I get add something that wasn't true before...I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!

Which btw, I SAW A FEW WEEKS AGO!!! Yes, me, The Romance Bookie, because of my "connections" (ooh, that's exciting to say!) got to see The DUFF movie way early, over a month before it actually hits theaters!!

Because I've been a supporter of Kody's since pretty much the very beginning, I was chosen as one of the lucky bloggers to help promote The DUFF movie!!  Trust me, when I say, I started screaming at work with excitement when I got that email!!

I will of course, take this job very seriously, and hope to do an amazing job of helping!!

Okay, I'm okay now.

So yes, it might be an understatement to say that I love this book.

Now to the reason why I love this book...

The message.

The reason this book caught my eye, all those years ago in Barnes and Noble, was because of the title.  The DUFF?

Well, not exactly,  it was the words hidden within that four letter shortening that caught my eyes...

That is what "DUFF" stands for.  I hadn't even read what the story was about, but my first thought all those years ago, when I read that was...

That's me.

I am the DUFF.

No joke.

Reading The DUFF by Kody Keplinger helped me realize a lot of things.  For one, having great friends is very important, when you find them.

And for two, always follow your heart.

And finally, what I really meant by how much I love the message of this book, is that no matter how pretty or skinny, or how many guys ask us out, every girl has most likely felt like the DUFF in their group of friends.  They may not have been able to put a name to it, but after reading The DUFF, I just knew that was the perfect description, while morbid, and sad, still the most perfect way to explain how all teenage girls have felt in their life.

Anyway, overall rating...

Kody wrote a book that every teenage girl should read.  Any girl that has had self-esteem issues, felt like she didn't fit into her friends' group, READ THIS BOOK!!!!

It holds so many answers!!

Anyway, you'll be seeing a lot more posts for the upcoming release of The DUFF movie, starring Mae Whitman, as Bianca, and Robbie Amell as Wesley.  So freaking excited!!! :)

Also don't forget to join us on February 2nd, for the Twitter chat with KODY KEPLINGER, herself, where everyone gets the opportunity to ask her any questions they may have!!  You do not want to miss this!! I'm trying to be there, but I'll be in Florida that week on vacation enjoying Walt Disney World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but I'm going to try to join in for a bit! :) It's going to be at 8 pm (EST) and 5pm (PCT)!

Beautiful Beloved (Beautiful Bastard #3.6) by Christina Lauren (ARC)

Yay!! Got another book in before I leave tomorrow for my vacation!!!

I received Beautiful Beloved in the mail yesterday and knew I just had to devour it instantly, and so that was exactly what I did this morning when I woke at 5:40 am wide awake, too hyped up and ready to go.

The Beautiful Bastard series is hands down my favorite adult series! It's got everything I like to find in a book.  Great characters.  Great stories.  Hysterical humor.  Just so much awesomeness!

Christina and Lauren (yes, it is two authors who write this book!) wrote yet another genius novella in this series!  We get to go back into the lives of Sara and Max, the two main characters from Beautiful Stranger!

I read Beautiful Stranger (the second in the series) back in mid 2013, which was when readers were first introduced to Sara and Max.  I was so excited to be back reading another one of Christina Lauren's books, that I just devoured that one!

With Beautiful Beloved the same thing happened!!

From Goodreads:

The seventh work in the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling series that started with the Beautiful Bastard, Beautiful Stranger, and Beautiful Player novels. Featuring all the Beautiful one tiny new addition to the group.

In Beautiful Stranger , finance whiz Sara Dillon met the irresistibly sexy Brit, Max Stella, at a New York City club. Through the series we’ve watched them learn to balance commitment with their less than private brand of playfulness. In Beautiful Beloved, Max and Sara take it to the next step. But the question is: Will they be able to find a balance between the wild sexcapades they aren’t ready to retire, and the demands of parenthood that come along with their new Beautiful bundle of joy? Parenthood: it’s not for the weak of heart.

My Thoughts:

Like I said, great continuation story from Sara and Max's POV!  It's great to know they are doing well after having had the baby, which I believe they had in the previous one, when they were featured as side characters.  I've read them all, but it's hard to keep them all straight!

Anyway, loved it!  It was funny, sensitive, yet kinky at the same time!  Sara and Max have a great relationship, I just love the way they are with each other.  Going from loving and caring and sensitive one minute, to loving, caring, yet kinky and rough the next.

Like I said, it's an adult book...with Sex.

Overall rating:

Anyway, if you haven't tried this series yet, I HIGHLY recommend it!  Their humor is my cup of tea definitely!  Love it!!

Beautiful Beloved comes out next Tuesday February 2nd!  So preorder or copy now on Amazon or Barnes and Noble for 99 cents!!! :)  It is available in ebook form only though, so be aware of that, however, it is short so it shouldn't be too difficult to read it on the computer or some other e-book compatible device! :)

Thanks everyone!! I'm off tomorrow morning for 10 days, so I don't know if I'll be posting anything new except the one schedule post I have for that time.  So talk to you all when I get back! :)

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Hey Everyone!

So the semester has officially started, so I'm back at work and school!  Reading time has unfortunately been cut down again a bit, but it's okay, I'm still attempting to make as much time as possible for reading this year!  Book three for 2015 is done (Review for book #2 is coming soon!)!

This time around, I read a book, I've had sitting on my shelf for almost a year, and have been wanting to read since I finished one of this author's novels last year, around this time.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

From Goodreads:

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Eleanor & Park.

A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan...

But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words... And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

"Touching and utterly real." —  Publisher's Weekly

My Thoughts:

Wow.  Rainbow Rowell has once again impressed me with her words.

I reviewed Eleanor and Park exactly one year and one day ago.  It was right after I had gotten back from Florida with my boyfriend.  Which is funny, because we are actually going back next week again for our ten day vacation!!!!

Anyway, just like Eleanor and Park, I absolutely truly enjoyed reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

Rowell has this way of writing so realistically, with so much power behind her words, that I, as a reader, found myself holding on to every single word I was devouring.

Cath, while at times extremely frustrating, turned out to be someone I found myself in.  I was very similar to Cath my first year of college.  I was a hermit.  I preferred to stay in my room.  Not hang out with people.  And my head was always in a book (Cath's is always in her laptop, writing her story).

Another thing I could really relate to was how Cath kept her authorship of Carry On a secret from the outside world.  No one but her sister, father, and later Levi know that she writes it.  Tens of thousands of people read each and every single one of her fan-fiction chapters of her take on a famous childhood story, yet no one knows it is a lonely freshman girl writing in her dorm room, lonely.  Even her sister won't talk to her!

When I first started The Romance Bookie, back in 2010, NO ONE but my mom knew I had a blog.  I was honestly embarrassed.  My friends already found it annoying how much I talked about the books I read, so I just didn't want to have to explain myself, on why I had started something I truly enjoyed doing, but no one understood.

It wasn't until almost two years later, that I sort of mentioned it to a friend, off handedly, and she was super impressed!  In fact, she brought up in one of friends' group events, and all my friends were super interested in what I was doing!

That was when I realized there was absolutely nothing to be ashamed about, when I was doing something I enjoyed.  No one could take that away from me! The Romance Bookie is mine, I created her, and she is a huge part of my life!

And that is what Carry On, is to Cath.

I loved it!

Levi, Cath's roommates ex-boyfriend was a great character too!  I loved his secret when it came out, because it made me realize and appreciate my love for books even more, because some people just don't get that luxury!

Overall rating:

I loved this book.  It had a great story, interesting characters, and so many great details that I found myself constantly wanting to get back to reading, when sadly I wasn't allowed to, due to work or homework.  My only problem I have is I would have loved a little more from the ending, but that's only because I wanted Cath to reach her goal.  But that's okay, because in a way she did.  She achieved what in the end was the right thing for her to do.

Can't wait to see what's next from Rainbow Rowell!

But anyway, I'm here to announce...

What is that? You may be asking?

Well, some of you may have heard about a book called The DUFF, by Kody Keplinger.  What some of you may also know is that The DUFF, has been made into a movie, and that it is hitting theaters next month on February 20th!!!  I'm very happy to say, I got to see it last week, and absolutely loved it!!  It was soon funny!!!  My review will be going up on February 20th, so be ready for that!!

Anyway, in the mean time we have some very exciting events coming up!!

Along with a few other fabulous bloggers, we are hoping to get a bunch of people to either read for the first time, or RERead The DUFF, to get ready for the movie next month!!!

The Read-a-Long officially started on January 13th, so yes, I'm a little bit behind on announcing again...once again, very sorry about that.  But better late than never, right?!! :)

Anyway, along with the read-a-long, we need your help!  We want you guys to tweet, Facebook, Tumbler, etc.  about The DUFF!  We want people to see this movie! I can tell you right now, I will 100% vouch for it, and say that it is hilarious, and everyone should go and see it!!!

How awesome is that??!!!

Kody is seriously so awesome!!

We are using the hashtag #ReadTheDUFF, for the read-a-long, and #DUFFChat, on February 2nd, for all of your questions, where you can tag @Kody_Keplinger, to get Kody to answer any questions you may have regarding The DUFF!!

How awesome is that??!!

I'm so freaking excited!!!! I can't even tell you, how excited I am to be a part of it!! I've been annoying my mom and boyfriend about how I am a part of this!! :)

So get reading!!

Last Call (Cocktail #4.5) by Alice Clayton

***WARNING!!! THIS BOOK IS FOR ADULTS!!! 18 and up!!!***

Hey Everyone!! :)

First review of 2015!!

And it's a good one!

Last Call (#4.5 in the Cocktail Series) by Alice Clayton, one of my favorite authors, due to her amazing humor!

From Goodreads:

From NEW YORK TIMES & USA TODAY bestselling author Alice Clayton, known for her “deliciously addictive” (The Book Vixen) novels, this Cocktail series novella reunites readers with Caroline and Simon from the wildly successful Wallbanger.

Simon and Caroline are back for another round of baking, banging, and big life changes. Settling in, but never settling down, Caroline has finally struck a balance between the professional and the personal. As one of the top interior designers in San Francisco, she travels all over Northern California between nook time with Simon.

Perpetual globetrotter Simon has cut his frequent flyer miles in half over the last year, preferring to balance his professional and personal life, as well.

The next step in their lives seems preordained—toasts, veils, and the aisle of rose petals. But when an accident on a photo shoot in Southeast Asia brings Caroline the most terrifying phone call she could ever imagine, she has to ask whether “till death do us part” is a more realistic prospect than faces most couples.

It’s been a grand adventure, and Caroline and Simon wouldn’t go out without the best surprise ending ever. One part sexy, one part laughter, a dash of exotic locales, and one pink nightie, mixed with passion, and you’ve got Last Call. Served with a side of Clive.

My Thoughts:

So I know, I know, I haven't had the privilege of reading the other books in this series, besides Wallbanger, which I read back in March of 2013, but since this one featured the same main characters as that first book, which made me laugh out loud throughout the entire thing, I knew I just had to read it when it was mailed to me by Gallery Books.  (Which by the way, THANK YOU GALLERY!!!).

So anyway, LOVED IT!!  I loved getting back into Simon and Caroline's world.  They are just the cutest couple ever!!  I love their chemistry!

I REALLY want to read the others now!!! SO BADLY!! I mean, I've been wanting to read them since they first came out, but now after having read Last Call, I REALLY want to even more!!!!!!

What is great about this book, is how it's not overly too much on the sex part.  I mean, yes there is sex, but an intense amount like in Fifty Shades.  There is just that perfect amount, to keep you on your toes, and yet still make you stir in your seat ;).

Like I said, an ADULT BOOK!!!!

Overall rating:

I really really like this series!!! So much!! And I haven't even read the ones in between, I know, probably not the best thing to say, because I'm promoting books I haven't even read yet, but I just can't help knowing that I would love the rest of this series!  Such great characters, she has this great sarcastic humor in her writing that I love.  She's also a fabulous and hilarious person in real life.  I got to talk and interview her last year at an event, which was a ton of fun! We bonded over our love for Robert Pattinson, and his role as Edward :).

So yes, definitely check it out! It came out yesterday so it is available now, in all book retailers!  Amazon and Barnes and Noble both have it! :)

I hope everyone has a great day and a rest of your week! :)

2015 Challenges!!

Hey Everyone!

Mandy & Erin here!

We're so excited to announce our 2015 Challenges that we will be participating in today!! It's going to be an exciting year, so these will make it even better!

For Mandy:

So first off, time to decide HOW MANY book I want to read at least by the end of 2015???!!!  Well, let's be honest the only reason I was actually to complete my goal of 50 last year, was because I had reread ALL of the Princess Diaries books, which was like 13 or 14 books in a couple of weeks! So for 2015, because I won't, most likely, be rereading them AGAIN, except maybe #10, for when the new one comes out in June (EEEEE!!!!!!), I have decided to lower that goal a tad this year.  I know, I know, but to be fair, if I feel I am doing very well, I can always raise that goal later! But I know 2015 is going to be another intense, yet exciting year, because I will hopefully be transferring to University this year!!!  I know, it's about time, right? It's only been SIX years in community college! Dang it, for always needing at least two jobs to survive!!  But it's alright, it's been well worth it, and plus it nice to have at least a little bit of my own money :).

Anyway, so for 2015 my goal, for right now, is to read at least 35 books.  I know, I know, it's pretty low, but I don't want it to be a competition, plus I don't need the pressure in my life.  Reading is fun, and a pleasurable time for me, so I want to keep it that way! :)

For my second challenge, I'm participating in the 2015 Ebook Challenge!  Unfortunately, it's not being hosted by the same person as last year, but someone new has decided to take on the challenge! :)  So Here is the Link:

My Little Hearts Melody 2015 Ebook Challenge!

My goal for 2015 is to read 10 Ebooks! Since my main focus will be reading my most anticipated and getting books off of my TBR shelf, I don't want to make too high of a goal, but I think 10 will both be acceptable, yet still challenging, but also fun along the way! :)

Next! Okay, this one looks super exciting!!

I found it when googling 2015 Reading Challenges :).

So PopSugar is hosting the ultimate Reading challenge! A checklist of books to be read!!

So that's it for this year for my reading goals!!

Now to Erin!!!

1.  Book Goal:

I honestly do not know how many books I read per year -- I wouldn't even be able to tell you approximately how many books I read in a year.  I know I read a lot, but I've never really kept track, so I'm not really sure what a good number to shoot for is???  Anyways, after a lot of thought, I'm going to start a little low and go with 30 books this year!  It might be too low -- or maybe not, maybe I'm overestimating myself -- but we'll see! :D  Either way, I'm super excited for all the book challenges for this new year and I can't wait to see what happens!!

2. The Classics Challenge

On top of the TBR Challenge, I also want to do a Classics Challenge this year.  This one is a super tough one for me.  I always want to read more classics, but I find that I end up bailing for a "Modern" book.

I'm going to make the rule that the Classics I read have to be something I haven't read before, so unfortunately, that means that lots of (but not all) Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte will probably be out :( But I'm also going to count the "American Classics" (Which not all people may count as classics, but I do :))  such as books by John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald, etc.

And now, my goal to read will be *drumroll*...TWO books! Okay, I know, I know it's ridiculously low number.  But to be honest, it's going to be a real challenge for me.  I mean, last year (2014), I read NO classics (because I already read Jane Eyre before, I don't count it.)  And honestly, besides Jane Austen and the Bronte Sisters, I've rarely read classics outside of school (which is one reason that I really really miss English classes, but that's besides the point).  Anyways, it's a real shame I haven't read more classics and I want to change that! So two will be my number to shoot for, but hopefully, I'll be able to surpass it! :D

3.  The 2015 Contemporary Challenge!

Yay!! Another challenge! For the new year, I want to read more contemporary books! I've always been more of a fantasy geek, so I haven't read too many contemporary books.  Not that I have anything against them -- there are lots of fabulous contemporaries -- but I also find that I'm usually more attracted to books with fantastical elements in them.  However, I have been noticing that I'm reading more contemporary books as of late and been enjoying them more (I just tend to be really picky about them!)  Anyways, this year, I'd like to make my goal to read at least TEN contemporaries (but the more the merrier)!.

4.  2015 Mount TBR Reading Challenge

HOLY MOLY!!! Aaah!!! Who let me buy all these books??? (Okay, I didn't buy everything on this list and some of them are from years past, but still...) I bought was too many books this year and my TBR pile has gone out of control! I'm actually a little bit worried at this point -- not to mention that my bookshelf space is getting seriously low.  So, naturally, my goal this year is to cut down on my TBR list!  And furthermore, I think I'll shoot for reading...25 books from this list! That might seem low from how many books I actually have on my TBR, but I know I'm going to be distracted by all the shiny new books coming out this year, so I'm hoping this will be a reasonable goal for me that I will be able to achieve! All right, here is the embarrassingly long list of TBRs!

6. The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows (March 10th, 2015)

From Goodreads

Woo hoo!! A new high fantasy series from Jodi Meadows!! I've been hearing about this one constantly and I want to read it so bad!! I love the title of this book and I heard it's about vigilantes, magic, and princess determined to take back her throne!! Doesn't it sound amazing??!! Plus, I heard it was pitched as Batman meets Games of Thrones, so I'm sold!
