One Day...

"One Day...". A phrase all of us has used at least once in our life, most likely.  Whether thinking, "One day... that car is going to be mine," or "One day...I'm going to travel the world..."; these are just examples of what many of us might think about, when we see or hear about something we want.

One Day by David Nicholls, is exactly about "one day".  A truly touching story containing love, humor, friendship, the phases of life, and the mistakes that are made along the way.  Emma and Dexter met in 1988, and became the best of friends.  What was supposed to start off as a one night stand, turned into a 20 year friendship.  Each chapter takes place on July 15th, a year later from the last year.  Over those 20 years of Dexter's and Emma's sometimes troubled friendship, the story goes through Dexter's troubled phase of trying "to have fun", and Emma's phase of trying to find herself.  While Dexter likes partying, Emma is more of the quiet one suffering unhappily through her life, working at a dive Mexican joint in London, where is trying to make money for rent and living expenses, after having graduated from college (the same year as Dexter, they had actually met the night after their graduation.)

Even though the reader soon finds out that Emma and Dexter are meant to be together, and they do get very close sometimes, however, unfortunately Dexter can be a total ASS!!!  Ugh, he bugged so much!!! Up until those last couple of years that the book takes place, Dexter was nothing but a selfish rich boy who got everything he wanted, because he had a pretty face.  He became a TV presenter, made great money, started partying, using drugs, drinking like no other!  Then slowly his life starts falling apart, but for some reason he still continues to be the selfish (insert bad word here!).

Emma over the years finally quits her job and becomes a teacher.  But then teaching becomes a little difficult due to an incident..., and she decides she wants to become a writer.

Over those 20 years, both Emma and Dexter find love (not with each other), they have a falling out, which keeps them separated for a couple of years; however, along the way they always seem to find each other back again, and start where their friendship left off.

One of the best love stories I've read in a while. Absolutely touching, thrilling, happy, and sad, until the very end!

Overall Rating:

About half way through reading this book, I was thinking that I actually didn't think I would like the movie version of this book (which just came out in theaters, featuring Anne Hathaway (from many amazing films, such as "Devil Wears Prada", "The Princess Diaries", "Love and Other Drugs") and Jim Sturgess, from "Across the Universe").  I think it was because of how much I hated Dexter throughout the book.  But then he changed, and it definitely changed my mind about wanting to see the movie.  I'm really looking forward to seeing it, and when I do, I will let you know how it compared to the book :).

Thanks everyone! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Oh and One Day I don't recommend for anyone under the age of 15 or 16.  Nothing explicit, but I thought some scenes were pretty intense with their content.
