Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James...Holy Sh#$!!!

Before I truly begin, I must warn!!

***WARNING!!! FOR MATURE EYES ONLY!!!***
Okay...I don't even know where to begin...

Let's see...hmmm...honestly??
I have no idea what to think!

There are just so many words that come to mind when describing E.L. James' #1 New York Times Best Selling Book, Fifty Shades of Grey...
Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1)
I'll start with the negatives first:
Disgusting (tampon!! EWW!!!), controlling man (I HATE THAT!!!), beating, spanking, and a main character that is easy to manipulate.

Now to the positives (and keep in mind some of these may be contradicting some of the words above, because like I said, I honestly don't know what to say):
HOT!!!!, Sexy!!!, loving (some parts), WOW!!!, did I mention HOT???!!, and...oh probably a ton of others, but I can't think of any others right now.

My head is reeling from this book!!

This book is kinky! Sex filled, page after page of SEX!, Christian Grey can be so sweet, but then the next SUPER SCARY!!, and Anastasia can be so frustrating!! Yet, at the same time so many parts were super hot!

I don't know!!!

Here's the Goodreads description:
When literature student Anastasia Steele is drafted to interview the successful young entrepreneur Christian Grey for her campus magazine, she finds him attractive, enigmatic and intimidating. Convinced their meeting went badly, she tries to put Grey out of her mind - until he happens to turn up at the out-of-town hardware store where she works part-time.

The unworldly, innocent Ana is shocked to realize she wants this man, and when he warns her to keep her distance it only makes her more desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her - but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey's singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success – his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving adoptive family – Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a passionate, physical and daring affair, Ana learns more about her own dark desires, as well as the Christian Grey hidden away from public scrutiny.

Can their relationship transcend physical passion? Will Ana find it in herself to submit to the self-indulgent Master? And if she does, will she still love what she finds?

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

The weird part is, to be honest, I don't understand why people have been comparing this book to Twilight.  The only similarity that I can think of, to be honest, is possibly that in Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey both Edward and Christian have secrets.  However, as much as some people say that Bella is a whiner, and she should have dumped Edward long ago, HE NEVER BEAT HER!! In my opinion, he just wanted to protect her! Okay, so Bella, I will admit, can be a total negative to the woman race! She allows herself to become dependent on a man, which yeah, I am not looking to do in my near future.  But Christian, honestly, there's not much to compare him on Edward.  There isn't even sex in Twilight!!! Okay so, maybe a little bit in Breaking Dawn, but BELIEVE ME NOTHING LIKE THIS BOOK!!!!!
The whole spanking part in this novel...yeah freaked me out a bit!! I just don't know!

Overall Rating:

I found myself giving it a four out of five star rating, but overall because I don't truly know how I feel, I think it's more of a three and a half rating.
Here's the weird thing!!

I JUST ORDERED THE NEXT BOOK!!! What the heck!! I don't know! This is one of those books I think a lot of people would find to be an absolute guilty pleasure!!

Have a great weekend!

  1. I am posting my review Monday on this book. Tooo funny that we had the same reaction about the same thing. LOL! GROSSED ME OUT!! Nasty!
And I think Bella and Anna are the same. 100% the same. The whining, crying, asking him a million questions about the same thing. Anna is just Bella in college. I am on the fence about the next book. Let me know what you think of it.

    1. LOL I think especially on certain parts a lot of people had the same reaction ;).

And yes, will definitely do! I just ordered it this morning, so it should be here by the end of next week.

  2. I think what my biggest issue is with the book is that it is essentially the same as the Twilight fan fiction she posted (Master of the Universe which you still can find online) with the names just changed-I think Dear Author had an article about it where they compared Fifty to its original version and there was only like an eleven percent difference. Publishing fan fiction just sort of rubs me the wrong way. One thing I wanted to ask is if the grammar is as hideous as people are making it out to be. I read part of Master of the Universe and there were a few typos there and there. So, I was wondering if it's the same.

    1. Oh ok, see I haven't read any of those fan-fiction. And yeah, I am not a huge fan of fan fiction.

And you know, the grammar wasn't really something I noticed. However, what it COULD be is the fact that EL James is a British writer, and sometimes they write in a little bit of a different way. But to be honest, unless there are a TON of spelling errors, it isn't really something I notice.

    2. OMG I just found a description somewhere of this short story (I couldn't find the actual story anymore), but you're right! It is VERY similar!
But at least she made the book with different characters! AND NO VAMPIRES!! lol

    3. I do remember reading about people complaining about the Britishisms, but I also remember reading somewhere it had something to do with sentence structure that there were lots of coma errors etc. I'm actually willing to give her a break on that (somewhat) since it was originally self published. But what bothers me about the whole thing is the very small differences between the fan fiction versus the actual book. I feel like just changing the characters names isn't enough to validate selling the book. Maybe it's because I've actually wrote some fan fiction in the past and I know that there's a huge difference between writing original fiction and fan fiction. Since with original fiction there's a lot more world and character building that has to be done prior to the actual stories while with fan fiction you have those two things done already from you even if you decide to put the characters in an alternate universe like James did.

Anyway, I'm probably over analyzing the situation. I find it fascinating though from a legal perspective though. Intellectual property is something I'm very interested in.

    4. Yeah one of my blogging friends and I were just discussing this on this comment spread too, she helped me realize how many times she repeated things! So many times, as I was reading, I just wanted to yell, "Rephrasing please!!" Ana continuously referred to herself as "my inner goddess" and such, oh jeez seriously we get it!! lol
But yes, I definitely see what you mean.

  3. I haven't checked this one out, mainly because I'm not sure if I'll be able to handle it :\ My friends have all said the same things: it totally grossed them out in places (but it was highly addictive). Maybe sometime down the road when I can pick up a used copy!

    1. Yeah that's the thing, it's gross but addicting! Weird! lol

  4. I can't go anywhere without someone having a copy of Shades of Gray. I finally read one and two - equally horrified and fascinated in some places. I tried the sample for book 3 and just couldn't do it. It's just not even close to reality (Billionaire, and then, the amazing sex every single time? I'm exhausted just thinking about it! LOL)

    1. Yes definitely when it comes to reality this series sucks. And I definitely NEVER want a guy like Christian! I've read a ton of reviews, and a lot of them mention, "Oh I WANT Christian", and after reading, I was like "Oh heck no!" What a perv!! LOL

  5. I didn't know it was Twilight fan fiction at first, but when I found that out, I started looking at it differently ... the similarities I saw was that there was the love triangle (Christian-Ana-Jose), but not as much, and also Christian was very controlling and always buying Ana presents, including the car.

And yes the tampon scene was gross. And yes, I'm not surprised that you want to read the next one. LOL!

I can't wait for the movie version, actually, I'm super interested to see who they cast. I could see Ian Somerhalder (Damon, Vampire Diaries) or Matt Bomer as Christian and either Felicity Jones (Like Crazy movie), Alexis Bledel, or someone "innocent-looking" for Ana. But I have no idea how they will keep it R and not NC-17!

  6. Oh, and I found the writing itself to be awful ... but the story was really good. lol. She uses the same phrases over and over, like "my inner goddess" and whatnot. And it was weird Ana had no computer or no email address ... no computer, maybe, if she was poor, but no email?! That's weird for a college student, IMO.

    1. That is so true! No computer? No email? Weird! And the repeating of the sentences! Totally true now that you mention in it!

When they were doing it, a TON of the times I got a bit bored because I was like, "Okay, rephrasing of words please!".

And are you going to be reading the next one??

  7. I recommend reading the blog Bad Books Good Times to see their negotiated reading of Fifty Shades - it isn't just entertaining, but you might see references to Twilight emerge whenever they're pointed out.
