The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour plus Giveaway!

The DisenchantmentsThe Disenchantments by Nina LaCour is the story of a really terrible girl band, who goes on a week long tour that takes them to a number of places between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon.  They take their friend, Colby along for the ride.

In the point of view, of Colby, whose in love with his best friend, Bev; who seems to be acting strange during their trip.

Colby and Bev have been planning a year long trip to Europe, since the 9th grade.  They have finally graduated from high school, and are ready to go...at least that's what Colby thought.

Bev has other plans though.  She decides to drop the bomb that she's gotten into RISD, and will be going there in the fall, and won't be able to go to Europe, leaving Colby with no backup plan because he thought they both had agreed that they would be putting a hold on college for a year, so they could travel and see all the places that they had dreamed about.

Colby is heart broken, especially because his best friend since the age of nine isn't really speaking to him, and telling him what made her change her mind, and why she didn't tell him sooner.

What will Colby do now?  Will they be able to enjoy the rest of their trip?  Why is Bev doing this?

My thoughts:

Overall, I thought this story was pretty good.  I think it makes a good summer read, fun for the beach, or for on the road.  The story felt real, the characters go through things that a lot of us have had to deal with, especially as we're growing up.
That being said though, there were a couple of things that really got to me.
Bev, Colby's best friend/secret love, is a witch with a capital B!  No matter her excuses, I believe what she did to Colby was absolute horrible and totally selfish! Not telling him that she applied for college and got in??!! Yeah, now he's stuck on his own, with no college plans, possibly stuck the next year twiddling his thumbs!  Unacceptable, in my opinion!

Also, there were times I was having a hard time remembering that Colby was actually a guy.  He had his moments where I really felt he was one of the girls.  I felt, almost as if, he was showing sometimes femininity; but who knows, maybe that was just my imagination...

Anyway, if you're interested in an easy reader, with a somewhat realistic story, or a good summer read, then I'd recommend reading this one! Keep in mind, there were some parts that got a bit mature and quite a bit of language in between, so this book might not be for the younger audiences; I'd recommend 16 and up.

I did want to share something with one lucky winner!
I got to meet Nina back in April, along with Gayle Forman (If I Stay & Where She Went) and Stephanie Perkins (Anna and the French Kiss & Lola and the Boy Next Door) (you can read my Recap on the Event HERE if you would like! :)); and while I was talking to her, she handed out these awesome temporary tattoos!
It says "Good Morning Sunshine"! :)

The tattoo is significant to The Disenchantments because at one point during their tour, one of the band mates, Meg, finds the perfect tattoo for herself.  She's been looking for something to get inked for months, and when she sees this design she knows she has to have it!

So I will be giving away one of these temporary tattoos to one lucky reader!! :)

    1. Please don't let me stop you from reading it!! A lot of people really love this one. It wasn't that I didn't like it at all, and I will say Bev got a little better at the end, but overall I just couldn't forgive her for what she did.

If you decide to read it, I'd love to hear your feedback afterwards! :)
